The northern coast of Pernambuco State, Brazil, is an wintering area for shorebirds originally from north America, especially from the east. The first flocks arrive in September, staying till April, when they molts, change plumage, and acquire enough biomass to migrate back to the northern hemisfere. In order to calculate flight range mass and length of the wing of Charadrius semipalmatus Bonaparte, 1825, Calidris fuscicollis Vieillot, 1819, C. pusilla Linnaeus, 1766 and C. alba Pallas, 1764 was recorded. Traps were carried out in Coroa do Avião (7º40' S and 34º50'W) in the northern coast of the State of Pernambuco, between May 1992 and April 1995. The length of the wing was registered with the wing spread (from the insertion of the bone till the extremity...

Taxonomic notes of Hemixantha (Diptera: Richardiidae) with description of a new species from the Amazon Region Rev. Bras. Zool.
Wentd,Lisiane Dilli; Ale-Rocha,Rosaly.
Richardiidae is represented by ca. 180 species in 33 genera. A new species of Hemixantha, now totaling 20 species, is described from the Amazon Region, state of Pará, Brazil, and from Teoponte, Bolivia. Hemixantha maculosa sp. nov., H. picta Hennig, 1937 and H. pulchripennis Hendel, 1911 are richardiids known to have an extensively banded wing pattern. Hemixantha maculosa sp. nov. represents the first record of Hemixantha from the state of Pará and this species can be distinguished from H. picta and H. pulchripennis by anepisternum and dorsal half of anepimeron bright yellow and vein R2+3 slightly sinuous. Besides the hyaline areas on the wing of H. maculosa are very distinct from these other species, as follows: (1) subtrapezoidal median area in cell cua1...

Variation morphogeometrics of Africanized honey bees (Apis mellifera) in Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Nunes,Lorena A.; Araújo,Edilson D. de; Marchini,Luis C.; Moreti,Augusta C. de C. C..
The morphometrics of the honey bee Apis mellifera L., 1758 has been widely studied mainly because this species has great ecological importance, high adaptation capacity, wide distribution and capacity to effectively adapt to different regions. The current study aimed to investigate the morphometric variations of wings and pollen baskets of honey bees Apis mellifera scutellata Lepeletier, 1836 from the five regions in Brazil. We used geometric morphometrics to identify the existence of patterns of variations of shape and size in Africanized honey bees in Brazil 16 years after the classic study with this species, allowing a temporal and spatial comparative analysis using new technological resources to assess morphometrical data. Samples were collected in 14...
